Course Description

This year’s Small Animal General Surgery Techniques program will cover practical reconstructive surgery of the ear, nose and throat, and trunk focusing on techniques that can be used in everyday practice. We will offer four full afternoon canine cadaver labs as well as an interactive wound lab on Thursday where participants will work with group mates to solve some challenging wound closures. The course will offer something for everyone in terms of techniques. Basic procedures such as stenotic nares repair, tracheostomy, thoracic tube placement, otoscopy, lateral ear resection, rotational and sliding flaps, Y/Z plasty and free skin grafts. Practitioners will be able to also challenge themselves with more advanced techniques including soft palate resection, laryngeal tieback, thoracotomy,TECA and axial pattern flaps. They will also be introduced to some newer innovative wound dressing methods. Our labs will be highlighted by vendors from Aesculite/Luxarcare, Karl Storz Veterinary Endoscopy and Covidien Animal Health, all of whom will provide CO2 laser, otoscopy and stapling equipment for your use during the labs. A team of experts in their respective fields will serve as your laboratory instructors.

Learning Objectives

Participants will learn:

  • The basics of dealing with upper airway obstruction, including corrective surgery as well as tracheostomy tube placement.
  • Otoscopic techniques and the indications and techniques for various surgeries of the external ear canals.
